In the sea of Torre Guaceto, the diversity of the submerged environments and the numerous species of naturalistic value have determined the inclusion of the Protected Marine Area in the List of Specially Protected Areas of the Mediterranean for the conservation of Biodiversity.
In our Farmhouse near Torre Guaceto can be appreciated through a walk with masks and fins, the first meters below the surface of the water are populated by a “grassy mantle”, consisting of several species of algae that offer shelter and food source to a complex community of organisms.
A careful exploration along the submerged rocky coast gives the opportunity to observe numerous dens where they find shelter fish belonging to the family of Sparids including bream and bream.
On the sand lay the eggs the plover, small limicolo bird; the eggs have the color of the sand, are arranged in a depression and camouflaged with shells and leaves of posidonia. There are many species that frequent this environment to seek food or to rest during migration. Along the entire coastline of the Reserve, the sandy beaches alternate with short stretches of cliffs.
Behind the dune numerous species of evergreen shrubs grow in close contact with each other and thicken to form the Mediterranean scrub. The species are adapted to counteract the heat and drought of the summer: the mastic, the alaterno, the asparagus biting, the shrubby thyme, rosemary, myrtle. Among the animals that frequent the environment of the bush include the badger, a very rare and shy mammal, the luscengola and lizard.
Behind the dune, where the aquifer emerges, the straw dominates unchallenged. Together with it, few other species, such as the bell, which uses the stems of the straw as guardians on which to climb to expose to the sky its large white flowers. The most frequent and striking animals are the birds. Some spend their whole life in this habitat, others, such as starlings and swallows, use it only at night to rest. Other marsh birds, such as the coot and the little grebe, build large floating nests anchored to the plants.
Very nice is the excursion by walking in the Reserve that crosses fragrant paths of Mediterranean scrub that lead to quiet beaches. You can then reach the Tower from which you can enjoy a beautiful view. It ends passing through the silent paths of the mysterious reed bed.
